Driver tuition is not just about the price, but about the way you learn to drive. Schools of motoring can have good deals for learner drivers and low cost tuition does not have to be poor quality.

If you see one school of motoring advertising driver tuition at £30 & another at £15 you might assume that the £15 is of poor quality. But what would you think if the £30 driver tuition was for one full hour & the £15 was for a half hour tuition. They are both the same, so how can you judge which is the best buy?

You can't from the information given, you will need more information.

A cheap lesson - the true cost

Here are a few questions you can ask your instructor to find the true cost of a lesson.

  • Do you charge extra for the driving test
  • Do you charge me if I cancel at short notice
  • How often will you change my lesson time or day
  • Do you give discounts for block booking
  • Do I have to share my driving lesson with someone else
  • Are there any other costs involved in learning to drive

Cheap driver tuition

  • Do you give door to door service
  • Is all driver instruction given on a one2one basis
  • Do you give a simple explanation about the workings of the clutch
  • Do you explain correct road procedure
  • Do you give your first lesson on quiet roads
  • Do you ever use your students to take you shopping (yes it does happen with not so good driving instructors)

Why do 500,000 fail their driving test every year?

Lack of practise - maybe!

Perfect driver!!

The way you drive does not have to be perfect. Over one million drivers take their driving test every year. Over 500,000 drivers fail their driving test first time. If the driving test was treated as school or college exams, in terms of results, then there would be a lot to answer for in our education system.

What is the difference between a driving test
and a college exam?

Porsche is not a cheap car, but lessons can be. Exams at college are geared towards a positive outcome. Teachers, students and examining bodies are all pulling in the same direction and targets have to be met. Hence reasonably high marks can be achieved. You are also taught mainly to memorise specific areas relevant to your exams. [You learn mainly to pass exams, you are not necessarily fully knowledgeable in that subject, sorry but it's a fact.]

The driving test and driver training are pulling in opposite directions. 'How is this possible?' You might say. Since driving instructors have to be registered with the DSA and driving examiners are paid by the DSA.

The difference is MONEY. At college you pay an annual fee, the educational institution pays the lecturers salary and you study but never thinking of the cost. You can put total focus on your exams & study through the night if you have to at no extra cost to you, other than your time.
With driver training you are focused on a cheap lesson, since you have to pay for each driving lesson including all practise times. That's why low cost driver tuition appears to be an attractive deal. Especially if you think you are going to need a lot of it.
Driving instructors are very familiar with the phrase

'I've been learning for over a year, and its cost so much money. I need to take my driving test.'

Would you cut your class tutorials short at college just before your final exam?

Cut costs

7 ways to reduce costs

  1. Have regular practise
  2. Have one practise lesson close to another such as an intensive driving course in Birmingham week day or weekend
  3. Book a driving lesson when you know you will not be tired
  4. Each and every lesson, stay focused
  5. Learn to drive with a driving instructor who uses a structured learning system
  6. Take a 2 hour lesson if you have to take a weekly lesson [saves the warm up time]

Low cost driver training
Cheap driver training does not necessarily mean poor quality driving instruction. If you think you are not progressing stage by stage and in the right direction then change your instructor, or if that's to drastic ask your instuctor to clarify where you are with your training at the moment & where do you need to be.

If your instructor gives you reasonable answers to your questions, then maybe there are other reasons why you are not progressing. If you get the answer that you need more practise & it is not defined as to what practise, then you may need to find another instructor, as your low cost driver training may not be so low cost after all.

Cheap driving lessons - good driving instructors

Not all good driving instructors charge a lot for their services. Some do give a great service which is very good value. Good driving instructors care about their pupils & will always try their best to help you to pass your driving test & are as disappointed as you will be if you fail your test. A good driving instructor will balance their tution price against the running costs of their business.

How much practise?

How much practise will you need? There are not an exact number of hours of practise that any one person will need. This will vary from student to student. Should you manage to understand all that you are taught first time, then you will need about 20 hours to just cover the syllabus. But then on top of that you will need to practise all that you have been taught a few times, to get it right, or perhaps more than just a few.

nervous learner driver looking for lessons This would add another 20 hours. Making 40 in all from start to finish. But there are many other points to consider, such as the teaching standards of your driving instructor, where you live, how often do you have your lesson (1 hour per week would mean you need more or 30 hours in a week would mean less)
