How is the driving test marking carried out?
Your driving test mark does not have to be perfect to pass
Driving examiners mark your driving test according to certain criteria. The most dominant criteria are 'car control' and 'observations'. These two dominate every driving test.
Neither is more important than the other, since if you have great car control, but do not see danger on the road, then its pointless. You need to have both.
When you are with a good driving instructor you probably would never fail your driving test on losing car control. But, no matter how good your driving instructor is, you may well fail on lack of observations. No matter how many extra lessons you have you might always miss seeing someting on the road. Having extra lessons though, will give you excellent car control. By the very nature of your driving technique, you would probably not fail on that.
Whether you are a complete beginner or just failed your driving test you have come to the right driving school to give you the best chance of passing your theory test or driving test. You will have the best possible advice and assistance to make it happen. You will be getting a fully qualified instructor.

Driving test marking
Is carried out by the driving examiner as soon as your name is called in the driving test centre and you sign your driving test marking sheet. You are signing to say that the car you will be using for the driving test is insured. From that moment on you are being marked, in this order
- Your signature and photograph match who you are
- Your eyesight is to the required standard
- You can answer two show me tell me safety questions
- You drive away safely
On the examiners driving test marking sheet you may have already incurred some minor faults in either the show me tell me answers or the driving off process. Should you either have the wrong type of car or the car you do have does not meet the driving test requirements for your driving test or fail the eyesight test you would have already been marked down with a major fault which means your test would not now take place.
Your driving test marking will contine now until the end of your driving test. At the end of your test you will be told the result of your effort. Fifteen minor driving faults, provided no fault was repeated more than 3 times would result in a driving test pass. Sixteen minor faults or repeating a minor fault more than 3 times would result in a fail. One major or dangerous driving fault would mean a fail, even if no minor faults were committed.
See if you can answer this question on driving test marking
Based on the information I have written above;
Could you fail a driving test if you accidently left your window wipers on after a shower of rain?
And you have already committed 15 minor driving faults.
This and many more insights into the mysteries of the driving test marking system are revealed to all of my students. Should you want to join the UK's top driving instructor and the many 1,000's of students who passed their driving test (usually first time) then contact me with your requirements
Here are a few more quirks about the driving test marking criteria
- Could you be marked down on the driving test marking sheet if you were driving on a clear open road at 30 mph when the speed limit is 60 mph. If so why? You are still safe, or are you?
- Could you be marked down on the driving test marking sheet if you drove over the white hatch marking lines in the centre of a road, or painted on a corner?
- Could you be marked down on the driving test marking sheet if you drove away from the driving test centre with your car bonnet partially open, after your show me tell me safety questions?
Join me in your wonderful journey of learning how to drive a car safely and pass your driving test first time. I have answers to all of the questions above and so will you, plus lots more, when you join me as one of my students.
